Although there are tons of Free Antivirus Software out there in the wild wild web, most of them are either crap or just don’t do the job. So here we selected the most reliable, most useful and more importantly, cheapest (Free! duh!). So here I present you the Top 5 Free Antivirus Programs of all time.


Microsoft Security Essentials



The people behind Microsoft has come up with a free antivirus solution for computers running Windows operating systems, specifically for those running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft Security Essentials or MSE can provide protection from various types of viruses, URL injectors, Trojans, malware and many types of spywares. One of the best things about MSE is the frequency of updates, ease of use, and runs very quietly in the background. This antivirus software has been developed in 2005 by Sybari and was then released by Microsoft Forefront.

Pros: Free obviously, user friendly and always up to date, and also features capped CPU usage.
Cons: Scan times are sometimes slow, and you can only schedule a scan once a week. Does not have a lot features compared to other free antivirus programs.

Avira Free Antivirus



Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG is a German company behind one of the most popular free antivirus today, they have been a long time player in the Anti-virus industry with over 25 years under its belt. Their Free edition boasts good detection and removal rates for malware and includes phishing protection for free which is great. Avira Free Antivirus also scan comparatively fast and does not consume a lot of system resources. Avira has been awarded as the AV Product of the Year in 2008 and it got the award for Speed category and received a Silver award from obtaining a 99.5% detection rate from the Summary Report of 2010.

Pros: very good detection rates, fast scanning, phishing protection and has the ability to prevent Autorunning of programs from removable storage medias.
Cons: Not very effective against rootkits and false positives. Phishing protection while free is not that great either.

Avast! Free Antivirus



Avast Free Antivirus was first released in 1988 and was designed as an antivirus for computer program. made for Microsoft Windows users. For a free program it has a lot of great features, such as antivirus kernel, shields, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, audible alarms and consumer alerts to name a few. Avast has a clean, uncluttered, easy to use interface, has a healthy dose of features with good performance while using system resources at minimal.

Pros: Has lots of features, minimal system usage, lots of real-time protection, provides website reliability ratings, rootkit protection and more.
Cons: Detection rates could be improved.

Panda Cloud Antivirus



Panda Cloud Antivirus is very easy to use and is one of the first Antivirus programs to rely solely on cloud computing. Although scanning speeds are slower than average, this is also one of the best Anti Virus programs out there in terms of minimal system usage which is great for Netbooks and other devices of the same specs. It also has a very easy to use interface due minimal features and settings.

Panda Cloud Antivirus

Pros: Installs fast, cloud based, efficient detection rate with minimal system usage.
Cons: Malware detection could be improved.

AVG AntiVirus



AVG is basically a household name in the Antivirus industry, even the idiot behind Tech4idiots uses it. Originally, AVG Antivirus was developed by AVG Technologies for systems running Microsoft Windows, FreeBSD platforms, Linux, Mac OS X. General functions features Internet security, periodic and scheduled scanning, repairing virus corrupted files and providing a quarantine area for suspicious files. For a free Antivirus, it has rather impressive detection rates, while maintaining a minimal system usage which is also great for Netbooks and such.

AVG AntiVirus

Pros: Very fast scanning, Phishing protection, great in Malware removal and blocking, lots of other features with minimal system usage, Tech4idiots recommends it.
Cons: Installs AVG Secure Search and AVG Security Toolbar which sucks if you don’t uncheck it during installation.
