Microsoft Security Essentials or MSE can provide protection from various types of viruses, URL injectors, Trojans, malware and many types of spywares. One of the best things about MSE is the frequency of updates, ease of use, and runs very quietly in the background. This antivirus software has been developed in 2005 by Sybari and was then released by Microsoft Forefront.
Pros: Free obviously, user friendly and always up to date, and also features capped CPU usage.
Cons: Scan times are sometimes slow, and you can only schedule a scan once a week. Does not have a lot features compared to other free antivirus programs.

Avira Free Antivirus
Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG is a German company behind one of the most popular free antivirus today, they have been a long time player in the Anti-virus industry with over 25 years under its belt. Their Free edition boasts good detection and removal rates for malware and includes phishing protection for free which is great. Avira Free Antivirus also scan comparatively fast and does not consume a lot of system resources. Avira has been awarded as the AV Product of the Year in 2008 and it got the award for Speed category and received a Silver award from obtaining a 99.5% detection rate from the Summary Report of 2010.
Pros: very good detection rates, fast scanning, phishing protection and has the ability to prevent Autorunning of programs from removable storage medias.
Cons: Not very effective against rootkits and false positives. Phishing protection while free is not that great either.

Avast! Free Antivirus
Avast Free Antivirus was first released in 1988 and was designed as an antivirus for computer program. made for Microsoft Windows users. For a free program it has a lot of great features, such as antivirus kernel, shields, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, audible alarms and consumer alerts to name a few. Avast has a clean, uncluttered, easy to use interface, has a healthy dose of features with good performance while using system resources at minimal.
Pros: Has lots of features, minimal system usage, lots of real-time protection, provides website reliability ratings, rootkit protection and more.
Cons: Detection rates could be improved.

Cons: Installs AVG Secure Search and AVG Security Toolbar which sucks if you don’t uncheck it during installation.
