Written by Tech84 on August 31, 2012

We already know pretty much how much our Smartphones cost, but how much is it’s true worth is a totally different thing. Sure we know that a contract free iPhone costs around $649, so it should be worth around that number. Geeks and other tech enthusiasts already knows whats under the hood of these smartphones, and can give you a quoted price on how much the individual costs of each components stack up. But that would not really reflect the actual worth of the Smartphone itself.

Wikipedia pretty much sums up what a smartphone is

“A smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a feature phone. “

And yes, due to the advanced computing capability of our smartphones, they can do a lot, a whole lot of stuff. Smartphones like the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy have lots of powerful features that if we list down the individual and traditional gadgets that have the same functionality, you’d be surprised how much it would cost to have these things individually. Our smartphones have the functionality of a camera, a video recorder , a music player/iPod, a GPS, a calculator, an eReader, a portable gaming system, and to quote the late Steve Jobs, “an internet communications device”, and if we buy these gadgets for their corresponding functions individually, we’d probably be spending up to approximately more than a thousand dollars. And these are just the basics, just out of the box functions that shows you how much of a powerful device our smartphones are.

And if we include the added functions of downloadable Apps, the possibilities seems endless. Lost your TV remote? There’s an app for that. Need to go mobile banking? There’s an App for that. Want to know how you would look like when you get old? There’s also an app for that. Pretty much, majority of functions found on different individual gadgets can be utilized using our smartphones. And that adds to the true worth of it, because of downloadable apps, you can add more and more functions to your phone and that adds up to its total worth.

But it’s also worth mentioning that you really might not need all those added functions, these functions could exist in your phone but you will never really find the need to use it. And that’s the beauty of it, unlike having to constantly bringing your camera or calculator, you always have your smartphone handy in case you might need to use those functions.

Many would bash Apple for overpricing their products, maybe they are correct, but maybe, it’s not just by adding up the prices of the individual components that make up the device but should also consider the product as a whole, the packaging, the presentation and the overall beauty of their devices. And for that, I would say it’s totally worth it.

So how much is your Smartphone worth? If you ask me, It’s totally up to you on how you value your device.
