Sony to remove YouTube, Maps and Near on the PS Vita

Written by Tech84 on January 29, 2015

Yeah you read that right, Sony is going to remove YouTube, Maps and the Near App for the PS Vita. This is bad news for users who like to use the YouTube, Maps and Near Apps on the Vita regularly, but really, who does?

Consoles, or any device for that matter would usually receive new apps, new features and other updates throughout its life-cycle. But this time Sony seems to take a step backward with the PS Vita, as Sony would be removing some apps on the Vita like YouTube, Maps and Near in a future Vita firmware update.

These apps have been available for the Vita since its launch, but as according to Sony, YouTube will no longer be available for download starting February 28 and will be officially unsupported by April 20. Maps and the Near App would be removed/disabled in a firmware update this coming March. So even if you decide not to update to the new firmware, these apps would cease to work.

However, some good news is that you would still be able to access YouTube and Google Maps via the Vita’s web browser, but with obviously limited functionality when compared to having a native app for YouTube and Google Maps.

Anyway, none of these apps are really essential for the Vita, users would rather access these apps on their iPhone or iPads (or any modern smartphone or tablet for that matter) but to users like us here in Tech4idiots, its always nice to have the option to have these apps on our devices.

Our friends over at Arstechnica reached out to Sony about it and here’s what they got:

In response to a request for comment from Ars Technica, a Sony representative said the YouTube app was being removed because “the service provider is upgrading their API for YouTube, and this has made it difficult for SCE to continue support of the application on PS Vita.” As for Maps, Sony says it has “decided to delete the features after considering users’ needs and market trends.”

wtf! I use the Youtube app on my vita more than my phone to save battery!

Using the vita for youtube is better: bigger screen! wtf is wrong with Sony

The YouTube app will not be available for download on the PSN store anymore, but from what i can understand, if you already have it installed you will still be able to use it.

So just don’t remove the YouTube app from your Vita.
