What to keep in mind when choosing a gaming laptop

Written by Guest Blogger on August 8, 2012

“Many hardcore gamers will look for the best ways to enjoy their favorite pastime. With all of the amazing games that can be downloaded to computers, it is important to know exactly what criteria to look for when you are seeking a gaming laptop. These are often the best gadgets for which to engage in your gaming as they give you the ability to compete against your friend and save your games directly to your hard drive, which many game consoles don’t allow you to do. There are several details you must explore when you plan on buying a gaming laptop that are essential in helping you to select the right one. What to keep in mind when choosing a gaming laptop

Screen Size, Resolution and Laptop Dimensions

First of all, if you plan on being able to tote your gaming laptop with you wherever you go, you must consider the size you want. This not only includes the screen size and resolution but the actual dimensions of the machine itself. A thick, bulky laptop is not ideal for lugging around to your friends’ homes or to take with you when you go on vacation. If you intend on bringing it with you everywhere, you will want to go with a smaller, thinner model, such as those that include a screen that falls between 11 and 13 inches. However, if you plan on simply keeping your gaming laptop at home, you might want to opt for a larger machine that includes a significantly larger screen of 16 to 18 inches.

Hard Drives and Solid State Drives

Hard drives and solid state drives are absolutely essential when it comes to choosing a gaming laptop. SSDs are very desirable as they give the user faster read and write access that results in a zippy system performance, which you want when you are gaming. SSDs are also better because they emit less heat and less power than standard hard drives. For best results, you might want to use an SSD and an external hard drive for saving your games.

Processor and Graphics Card

The processor and graphics card are extremely important in any gaming laptop. You will need a heavy duty processor that can handle all of the work that goes into hardcore gaming. As for the graphics, the better the card, the better the graphics on your computer, which means you will have the best overall experience while playing your favorite games. If you choose a cheaper graphics card that is of mediocre or low quality, many of your games will not even run smoothly. Radeon, Intel, ATI and AMD tend to have top quality graphics cards and processors.

Battery Life

Another aspect to consider if you are planning on using your gaming computer outside of your home is the battery. Should you choose to play outside or elsewhere and there is no outlet available for your laptop’s adapter, you will require a battery that is strong and large, offering you several hours of life.

Memory Capacity

Memory should also be a huge factor in deciding which laptop is right for your gaming experience. Because of the hard work they have to do, any gaming laptop should have a high amount of RAM. Six to 8GB should suffice, but you may even find machines that have as much as 12GB.

Price and Brands

Obviously, the price is another detail that is of interest to anyone who is seeking a new gaming laptop. Although many desktop computers that are meant for gaming can be quite expensive, many laptops these days, even those deemed for hardcore gaming, are reasonable. It is worth your time to explore various gaming laptops that are within your budget that will suit your needs. Some of the best brands to look at are Sony, Acer, Toshiba and Alienware.”
